Not sure who noticed but we had one not so nice commenter in our Tuesday discussion. His comments got me thinking about the insane amount of taxes we tolerate.
Part of the problem now is that everyone uses plastic for even the smallest transaction. If the business is being hit with a fee connected to the number of uses, small transactions can be a real drain on profitability.
Business used to have limits. Meaning if you’re not spending at least $10 you must pay with cash. But then the credit card company told them that wasn’t legal.
Personally, I do try and pay cash for small transactions.

Well, stop voting for these fools. I mentioned that property taxes in Westchester County NY can run to $30,000 $40,000 per year, or more. They have only themselves to blame when they pull the lever for these useless Demonrats.
I live in a heavily blue, addicted to taxes, area. No one in my family votes for those fools. Doesn't seem to matter. More disturbing is seeing money from CA finding its way into our local elections.
WA state used to be solidly purple; Tim Eyman's ballot initiatives ($30 car tabs, property tax limited to 1.5%, ending affirmative action) all resoundingly passed (that they were overturned by the corrupt state SC is another matter).
That all stopped with 100% mail-in cheating. There is a reason why one party is against voter ID....
Dubious at best. When I worked in Philadelphia, but lived in NJ, I was forced to pay the city wage tax, but was not allowed to vote in Philly City elections. Sounds like taxation without representation to me. Very frustrating.
I’m certain someone somewhere along the way challenged this and the City won. The consolation prize was that I was able to credit the Philly tax against my NJ tax obligation, subject of course, to limitation.
Of course. I wonder what our total tax bite is. Income, property, sales, excise etc. Why do we put up with this garbage for a paltry return and simply to fuel the grift revealed by DOGE?
A great question Bruce. I’m confident that the total of all of the taxes we pay are at least 50% of our income. I live in NJ and plan to move, hopefully to Nevada, once I wrap up some obligations I have here. Living in Nevada gets me state income tax free and near Lake Tahoe, and a short commute to the Bay Area to see my daughters. At least that’s my plan now.
Uh no. The rebate is one size fits all. A fixed amount. It doesn’t vary for circumstance. It’s the same for every person. Doesn’t discriminate. Rich get it poor get it.
In New York City, my quarterly water bill includes water, sewer, and insurance. The insurance covers broken pipes between the main and the outside wall of the house, but not inside the wall and certainly not inside the house.
So we certainly do pay to flush our toilets.
Careless tenants who notice drips and leaks in their sinks or showers, or toilets that run because the little ballcock valves are dried out, and just shrug, cost their landlords loads of money.

Yes, it covers energy efficiency programs, low-income assistance, subsidies to our nuclear plant, and subsidies to EV charging station. In short, every facet of grift imaginable.
That is insane, Dog. My Con Ed bill for most of the winter is anywhere from $65-$75 a month, and that's with four malfunctioning solar-activated security lights on 24/7.
When we turn on the basement dehumidifier, upstairs ceiling fans, and the one small 5000-BTU AC in summer, all bets are off, of course.
Your bill is astronomical. Do you use LED bulbs? Do you have computers, stereos, and TVs plugged into power strips turned to OFF when not in use? Anything operated by remote control sucks up energy 24 hours a day whether on or not.
This is a small duplex. The power strip in my partner's man cave are on, but that's IT. There is absolutely something seriously wrong with our bill, but whenever I call about it, Con Ed claims that we have to pay for the inspection to find out what's leaching electricity and billing us for it.
Consider this: most lights off during the day. Just a fan or two operating in the summer. The lowest bill in summer -- again -- no air conditioning -- has been about $150. This summer it's still climbing over $200 no matter how little electricity we've been using.
I'm at my wit's end with this. I KNOW we're overpaying -- and suffering the heat for NOTHING.
Someone has probably plugged into your line. It happens. A neighbor three houses away somehow rigged Mom's telephone line for a second line at his house. I discovered it when I was in the backyard and saw a strange wire attached to our fence.

I will say that the winter spouse was reading mostly online (Cicero, in Latin) saw much higher bills.
Con Ed bill for our studio apartment is $100 month (approximately)-even when we are not there. We left the a/c on money saver last month and the electric bill was still $ 100.
How do they tell what you're using electricity on?? Unless they have some kind of monitoring system connected to your water heater and each of your lights, how the heck can they know?
I honestly do not understand how it works. I just looked at this graph on the recent bill that says our usage INCREASED from winter. We use heat in the winter, and that involves electric use. We suffer the heat without air conditioning to save money, and the usage increased? We must be paying for someone else's usage somewhere. The hall? The chandelier in the hall? It's also suspect that our bill is attached to the address of the corner bodega in our buidling -- not to our actual address. I need answers!
I feel for you. Going up against bureaucracy is never fun, and I can only imagine that goes double (triple? quadruple? exponential?) for NYC bureaucracy. Good luck!
New York City electric meters are read remotely. They're pretty smart. Using electricity at non-peak hours might save some cents; but in a multi-family home and with a bodega around the corner, an electric reading might not be what it should be.
Unless Dog and partner are on plugged-in computers and listening to the stereo or simultaneously watching TV twenty hours a day, the reading is odd indeed.
Here in Michigan, DTE has an app showing how much energy you use daily. It's a day behind, but it's better than paying 80 dollars and a monthly fee to get real-time results. I can usually remember what I did yesterday. It's supposed to cool off tomorrow, and the windows will be opened, and I can return to normal daily usage.
The electric line from the outside is attached first to a meter and then to what we used to call the fuse box, and then to wires throughout the house. The meter knows how much electricity gets sucked up.
In my basement, if I wanted to, I could watch the electric meter go tick, tick --. We used to have to read it ourselves and call in the numbers if we missed the Con Ed guy.
That’s why I can’t figure out how they can tell what the electricity is being used for. Without some kind of ‘smart’ monitoring installed inside the house, they should not be able to know anything except how much electricity flows through the meter.
You'd probably have to have meters attached to separate circuits in the distribution board. How much energy went into the kitchen? The upstairs AC's? (And so on.) Otherwise, it would be impossible.
In my ancient-ish house, it's impossible anyway. Any one of my circuit breakers might be handling an upstairs lamp plus one dining room outlet and two kitchen outlets. Another could have the attic and a living room outlet. I'm lucky if the oil burner and fridge have dedicated lines. It's a mess.
My longtime master electrician, who is not responsible for the mess that passes for wiring in my c. 1854 house but at least kept things inspected and safe, retired, and the new guy I called to deal with a kitchen outlet ghosted me.

They had always said Russia tried to influence the election, but in the end had little impact on US social media or influence over the election outcome. I'm here like, wtf are they talking about? The controversy wasn't what Russia did. It was that they accused Trump of colluding with Russia and was a Russian asset. None of them even addressed now. Like it never happened. Like I imagined it. I'd say that's another rumor. No doubt AI reaches into Wikipedia too. But AI's reach is so immense and vast, people who say it relies heavily on any single source actually have no real idea how extremely powerful AI is. Why would it rely mainly on Wikipedia when it's capable of reading thousands of academic journals, articles, and historical records in one second?
I'm pretty dim about such things. But this is what AI says -- but what does it know?

So when someone says "AI relies on Wikipedia...", which AI are they talking about? One of them is Google, which I'm sure has one of the largest data set in the world after decades of hoarding data. Another big issue now that is being litigated in court (and in fact already ruled on at the lower court level) is that Meta used millions of pirated books to train AI, thus violating copyrights. Whoever said this is saying Google relies on measley Wikipedia over their own immense library of data, and Meta relies on Wikipedia despite accessing millions and millions of books of all kinds? The claim doesn't fly. AI is called "Large Language Model" for a reason. It's trained on everything that's out there. If it only uses Wikipedia, why would anyone need AI? People can just go to Wikipedia.
Reality is, AI will soon make Wikipedia obsolete.
I suggest you test this for yourself. Try out one of the AI platforms and see what it can do. AI is not just for information. That's already passé. It's moving onto being a tasks manager. AI bias is an open issue. But this claim sounds biased.

Violence has always been a hallmark of humanity. Conflict is the crucible from which success and dominance arise. The media, in general, love to highlight this violence for a couple of reasons. One, it increases eyeballs on their feed, which means more adverts, which means more MONEY! And secondly, it promotes their predilection toward pacifism and the belief that society needs a savior who will solve all of their problems. The sad fact is that violence is baked into the human genome, and our reaction to it will determine who we are as a society. I am pessimistic about our future.
The problem with the violence this time was a black mob attacking an elderly white man for being white. Jumped him according to what I read, but I can't confirm as I couldn't stomach watching it. Then a white woman went to check on the victim and one of the mobs sucker punched her out cold and left her lying on the street bleeding from the mouth. I wasn't sure if she died on the spot. The woman is (was?) single mother with a small child. MSM didn't cover it until the video went viral. When they covered it they specifically left out any mention of race or that it was a racially motivated attack.
Ofc conservative social media is rightly pointing out the MSM would be all over this if the races were reversed.

I take guidance from Aayan Hirsi Ali on this. Islam as a political doctrine needs to be clearly and legally separated from Islam as a religion. I don't think they can. Their deeply entrenched, forcibly brainwashed fundamental beliefs will not allow them to surrender. It’s an interesting balancing act for sure. I believe that there are tactical differences between how Bibi wants to handle Gaza and how Trump would handle it. Part of the problem now is that everyone uses plastic for even the smallest transaction. If the business is being hit with a fee connected to the number of uses, small transactions can be a real drain on profitability.

Dubious at best. When I worked in Philadelphia, but lived in NJ, I was forced to pay the city wage tax, but was not allowed to vote in Philly City elections. Sounds like taxation without representation to me. Very frustrating.

A great question Bruce. I’m confident that the total of all of the taxes we pay are at least 50% of our income. I live in NJ and plan to move, hopefully to Nevada, once I wrap up some obligations I have here. Living in Nevada gets me state income tax free and near Lake Tahoe, and a short commute to the Bay Area to see my daughters. At least that’s my plan now.

In New York City, my quarterly water bill includes water, sewer, and insurance. The insurance covers broken pipes between the main and the outside wall of the house, but not inside the wall and certainly not inside the house.
So we certainly do pay to flush our toilets.

This is a small duplex. The power strip in my partner's man cave are on, but that's IT. There is absolutely something seriously wrong with our bill, but whenever I call about it, Con Ed claims that we have to pay for the inspection to find out what's leaching electricity and billing us for it.
Consider this: most lights off during the day. Just a fan or two operating in the summer. The lowest bill in summer -- again -- no air conditioning -- has been about $150. This summer it's still climbing over $200 no matter how little electricity we've been using.

I honestly do not understand how it works. I just looked at this graph on the recent bill that says our usage INCREASED from winter. We use heat in the winter, and that involves electric use. We suffer the heat without air conditioning to save money, and the usage increased? We must be paying for someone else's usage somewhere. The hall? The chandelier in the hall? It's also suspect that our bill is attached to the address of the corner bodega in our buidling -- not to our actual address. I need answers!

Ours uses smart meters, but you have to sign up and pay for the program.
New York City electric meters are read remotely. They're pretty smart. Using electricity at non-peak hours might save some cents; but in a multi-family home and with a bodega around the corner, an electric reading might not be what it should be.
Unless Dog and partner are on plugged-in computers and listening to the stereo or simultaneously watching TV twenty hours a day, the reading is odd indeed.
Here in Michigan, DTE has an app showing how much energy you use daily. It's a day behind, but it's better than paying 80 dollars and a monthly fee to get real-time results. I can usually remember what I did yesterday. It's supposed to cool off tomorrow, and the windows will be opened, and I can return to normal daily usage.
The electric line from the outside is attached first to a meter and then to what we used to call the fuse box, and then to wires throughout the house. The meter knows how much electricity gets sucked up.
In my basement, if I wanted to, I could watch the electric meter go tick, tick --. We used to have to read it ourselves and call in the numbers if we missed the Con Ed guy.
That’s why I can’t figure out how they can tell what the electricity is being used for. Without some kind of ‘smart’ monitoring installed inside the house, they should not be able to know anything except how much electricity flows through the meter.
You'd probably have to have meters attached to separate circuits in the distribution board. How much energy went into the kitchen? The upstairs AC's? (And so on.) Otherwise, it would be impossible.
In my ancient-ish house, it's impossible anyway. Any one of my circuit breakers might be handling an upstairs lamp plus one dining room outlet and two kitchen outlets. Another could have the attic and a living room outlet. I'm lucky if the oil burner and fridge have dedicated lines. It's a mess.
My longtime master electrician, who is not responsible for the mess that passes for wiring in my c. 1854 house but at least kept things inspected and safe, retired, and the new guy I called to deal with a kitchen outlet ghosted me.

Violence has always been a hallmark of humanity. Conflict is the crucible from which success and dominance arise. The media, in general, love to highlight this violence for a couple of reasons. One, it increases eyeballs on their feed, which means more adverts, which means more MONEY! And secondly, it promotes their predilection toward pacifism and the belief that society needs a savior who will solve all of their problems. The sad fact is that violence is baked into the human genome, and our reaction to it will determine who we are as a society. I am pessimistic about our future.
The problem with the violence this time was a black mob attacking an elderly white man for being white. Jumped him according to what I read, but I can't confirm as I couldn't stomach watching it. Then a white woman went to check on the victim and one of the mobs sucker punched her out cold and left her lying on the street bleeding from the mouth. I wasn't sure if she died on the spot. The woman is (was?) single mother with a small child. MSM didn't cover it until the video went viral. Thanks Disa. I didn't know that the Islamic doctrines specifically targetted the Druze. I know little about the Druze and have been educating myself a bit but hadn't yet come across that telling piece of information. You will get no argument from me that every president plays both sides against the middle when it comes to the islamists. I don't think it's right, but I also think America has always been somewhat between a rock and hard place politically with the Islamists going back all the way to Jefferson and Adams re the Barbary coast Islamic pirates. The following Monday I went to the health department website to see how to report it. Ordinarily, I wouldn't, since you can never be sure what you ate that made you sick. But since that was literally the only thing I'd eaten, there was no question what the source was. I had to leave a voicemail for the enforcement officer, and while I was waiting for him to call me back, I looked into the inspection record of that Burger King: a persistent and worsening pattern of violations that were not corrected.
My conversation with the enforcement officer was not encouraging. He tried to suggest that it might have been something else that made me sick (in this case, no, absolutely not). And he was very wishy-washy about the prospect of anything being done about it. Government employee in the People's Republic of llinois...I should have known better.
