Sharing Saturday - Favorite flower?
I’m running out of ideas here! Suggestions?
What’s your favorite flower?
My mom’s favorite flower was always carnations, but my dad liked roses and grew a lot of them. I, too, love roses. And not so much the long-stemmed variety from a florist. I like real roses from a rosebush. The first bouquets from my parents’ yard tended to appear in vases on the kitchen table around my birthday in early June. Back when I was more emotionally labile, on my 27th or 28th birthday, I dissolved in tears when Mr. Celia brought me a vase of unnaturally orange long-stem roses. Bless the man—he immediately went and begged real roses from our neighbor, who grew them in abundance.
I also love columbines, although those tend not to last in bouquets. My ‘elopement’ wedding bouquet was columbines from a plant my best friend was growing in front of her house. And I adore lavender for the smell.
But if I had to choose between a wildflower bouquet and a florist bouquet, I’d choose the wildflower bouquet every time. The vase on my desk at this very moment has a mix of purple dame’s rocket and yellow wild mustard, picked on our way home from the park the other day. Weeds to everyone else; beautiful to me.

As far as favorite cultivated flowers go it's a toss up between the lilacs and peonies of my childhood. But I have come to love the wildish rugosa roses planted here locally. They bloom so abundantly smell so lovely and are deliciously edible. They don't make good cut flowers tho which is okay by me as I am not much into the vases and care thing for that. Up in the mountains the flowers speak a different language and are more about a promise of food and future fruit and attracting butterflies and hummingbirds. Hard to pick a fav there - but maybe the beautiful pink flowering currant native to here and a super early hummingbird food. Most delicious flowers for humans too.
My favorite is the flour you make cookies and cakes with. I am not a botanist but I am a proud glutonian. And I also like flourless chocolate cake too but without too much sugar.
