Female respiratory therapists peformed all the tests, except the six minute walk. A 6'3" 200+ male respiratory therapist monitored that test. He was the size of a fit linebacker. Around 1996, I had a student, in my Intro to Theatre class, who could not open his mouth without saying f—— (and at least three other choice, forbidden words). For the first two weeks of school, most of my class time was devoted to dealing with this one student. No tried-and-true method of discipline nor reasoning quelled his disruptive tongue.
Finally, I was reduced to referring him to the office at least twice every period. He always came back immediately, but at least I could get some teaching in while he was walked to and from the office.
Then, one morning, the student did not return immediately. Instead, his security-guard escort came back alone - to take over my class, since I was, “needed in the office.”
There, the principal informed me that I was never to refer this student again. Since he was both ‘special ed’ and African-American, he was unable to control his tongue and MUST be excused for this behavior. By the time I was able to return to class, the period was over.
The next morning, the offender entered my room grinning ear to ear. He knew he’d won. The invectives started as soon as he cleared the doorway.
But, before he took his seat, the same security guard was at his side, holding my pre-written referral. I had warned him to be prepared to, once again, take charge of my class. He, too, was smiling. He knew I was the only teacher on campus willing to buck the principal like this. My note, which he had read, checked the required boxes and delineated the usual offense, but ended with this sentence: “If Mr. ——— is returned to my classroom this period, consider this referral form my resignation.”
I never knew where Mr. ——— went after that, but I never saw him again and nothing more was ever said about this incident.
Ten years later, the rule throughout all county districts was changed so that students could not be disciplined for language unless it accompanied violence or the direct threat of violence. I still could not use any word more offensive than ‘damn’ onstage, but a student could call me a ‘f—-ing b—-h’ to my face without consequence.
That rule change was made over twenty years ago. Many younger politicians grew up freely using offensive vocabulary in all situations and among all company. That is when I would have filed a grievance against that principal through the Broward Teachers Union. I do not generally support teachers' unions, but there are a few exceptions. In your case, the union would have had my back. All states are different. In Florida, having to tolerate such behavior from a student would be against my contract. Forget about me, I've heard it all, but why should the rest of the class be subjected to such language? That issue would be the driving force in putting an end to that. These are people's children! At that time, the district in which I worked was the most corrupt in California. I was in the process of writing for a huge grant. The district would have withdrawn support for my application if I had publicly stood against the principal.
Three years later (after the grant had been awarded), I did file a complaint against him - for another incident involving a group of teachers (not including myself). This led to him being 'promoted' to an empty office at District headquarters, where he was allowed to serve his time in retirement (until actual retirement). No one actually, ever, got fired from that district - even embezzlers and pedophiles.
After moving to NC, I attended a party where I met a woman who had been instrumental in the ESL program in California during my tenure. She asked where I had taught. When I said I had spent ten years at MVHS (whole name, not initials) she practically fell off her chair. "I've always wanted to meet someone who taught in that district! How did you survive?!" So, yeah. It was bad.

I can't place my finger on the "moment" it happened, but we've decided that it is not our place to impose any judgement on our fellow citizens, even "public servants". But the stronger the word, the more skill it takes to use it *well* and *effectively.* When someone peppers their language constantly with profanity, they lose the ability to vary their vocabulary choices to the situation. If everything is f-this and f-that, what words can you possibly use to express yourself when you want to express *real* anger or horror?

It's funny you say that. Last week I finally bit the bullet and saw a pulmonologist. Before a diagnosis I went through two days of tests and procedures. Female respiratory therapists peformed all the tests, except the six minute walk. A 6'3" 200+ male respiratory therapist monitored that test. He was the size of a fit linebacker. Most patients are elderly and overweight. I'm thinking a young, well built man is necessary in case someone falls or collapses. Most women would be useless in such a situation.

For me it’s all the circumstances. It’s timing and delivery. A person who swears a lot is stupid and boring. They don’t have the conversation skills to make their point. But someone who has those conversation skills can use foul language very effectively. But I would really like to see Trump at the state of the union tell the Dems to F off. I can dream.
Around 1996, I had a student, in my Intro to Theatre class, who could not open his mouth without saying f—— (and at least three other choice, forbidden words). For the first two weeks of school, most of my class time was devoted to dealing with this one student. No tried-and-true method of discipline nor reasoning quelled his disruptive tongue.
Finally, I was reduced to referring him to the office at least twice every period. He always came back immediately, but at least I could get some teaching in while he was walked to and from the office.
Then, one morning, the student did not return immediately. Instead, his security-guard escort came back alone - to take over my class, since I was, “needed in the office.”
There, the principal informed me that I was never to refer this student again. Since he was both ‘special ed’ and African-American, he was unable to control his tongue and MUST be excused for this behavior. By the time I was able to return to class, the period was over.
The next morning, the offender entered my room grinning ear to ear. He knew he’d won. The invectives started as soon as he cleared the doorway.
But, before he took his seat, the same security guard was at his side, holding my pre-written referral. I had warned him to be prepared to, once again, take charge of my class. He, too, was smiling. He knew I was the only teacher on campus willing to buck the principal like this. My note, which he had read, checked the required boxes and delineated the usual offense, but ended with this sentence: “If Mr. ——— is returned to my classroom this period, consider this referral form my resignation.”
I never knew where Mr. ——— went after that, but I never saw him again and nothing more was ever said about this incident.
Ten years later, the rule throughout all county districts was changed so that students could not be disciplined for language unless it accompanied violence or the direct threat of violence. I still could not use any word more offensive than ‘damn’ onstage, but a student could call me a ‘f—-ing b—-h’ to my face without consequence.
That rule change was made over twenty years ago. Many younger politicians grew up freely using offensive vocabulary in all situations and among all company. Why should they change their habits for a public platform? Older politicians probably believe they have to talk this way to reach their younger audience - and they may be correct.
That is bizarre. Was this in a city? An urban district? Or somewhere else? The "he's black and can't help himself" is so utterly wrong and stupid I can't get past it.

Learning proper English does not stop a person from switching to "street language" when appropriate, and using formal English when that would be advantageous. One can switch back and forth, according to the circumstances.
My husband attended an almost entirely black junior high school (two Italian, four Chinese). He could switch to “street language” at the drop of a hat. His perfectly-timed, “Yo mama,” could undermine an antagonistic student (or bust up an entire class), as needed, every time.

It's hard for me to "like" that comment. I hit "like" because I appreciate you sharing the lunacy. That is when I would have filed a grievance against that principal through the Broward Teachers Union. I do not generally support teachers' unions, but there are a few exceptions. In your case, the union would have had my back. All states are different. In Florida, having to tolerate such behavior from a student would be against my contract. Forget about me, I've heard it all, but why should the rest of the class be subjected to such language? That issue would be the driving force in putting an end to that. These are people's children! I am there to do no harm. By allowing a principal to interfere with the best interests, of the good of the group, wouldn't fly with my colleagues or the district administration.
At that time, the district in which I worked was the most corrupt in California. I was in the process of writing for a huge grant. The district would have withdrawn support for my application if I had publicly stood against the principal.
Three years later (after the grant had been awarded), I did file a complaint against him - for another incident involving a group of teachers (not including myself). This led to him being 'promoted' to an empty office at District headquarters, where he was allowed to serve his time in retirement (until actual retirement). No one actually, ever, got fired from that district - even embezzlers and pedophiles.
After moving to NC, I attended a party where I met a woman who had been instrumental in the ESL program in California during my tenure. She asked where I had taught. When I said I had spent ten years at MVHS (whole name, not initials) she practically fell off her chair. "I've always wanted to meet someone who taught in that district! How did you survive?!" So, yeah. It was bad.

Many of the topics we discuss on Tuesdays have the same solution, vote them out. But we seem incapable of that and I don't see a chance of term limits ever being enacted. Our public politics is now all performative and the pols have realized their audience is pretty coarse, so they use words that within my lifetime would have been the end of a political career. And not just the words but the policies for which they advocate with those words. Fuck ICE is now a standard tagline, even a disgraced wannabe like Platner ended his statement with that, along with Free Palestine. Policies that should be so far outside the mainstream just saying them lets everyone know you're an idiot and shouldn't be trusted with book of matches let alone a seat in Congress.
If you follow me around for a day you'll hear plenty of foul language, but not when I'm in a class or a work meeting or paying for groceries. I can't place my finger on the "moment" it happened, but we've decided that it is not our place to impose any judgement on our fellow citizens, even "public servants". So now politicians pepper their remarks, especially in front of friendly crowds, with curses (I saw a clip of Tlaib yesterday that perfectly illustrates that) and no one calls foul. It also allows for all other kinds of behavior that used to be reigned in by parents, family members, teachers, neighbors, and even voters.

What's on TV is one of the primary problems. Culture is always a double-edge sword--as it can control things that should be considered normal.
